Black Tea Music is proud to welcome, in collaboration with Subito Music Corporation, Susan Kander to the Black Tea Music roster. Praised for music that is “wrenchingly powerful” (Gramophone) and leaves you “…waiting for more” (San Francisco Chronicle), Kander’s music has received performances throughout the United States and around the world. Her recent opera, The News from Poems, received a concert performance at the National Opera Center in April 2016. In 2012, the Minnesota Opera and the Lyric Opera of Kansas City commissioned an adaptation of Louis Lowry’s beloved novel The Giver, which has since gone on to receive an additional production with Tulsa Opera. This adaptation was praised as “a sophisticated and subtle work” with “atmospheric” scoring (Knight Arts). Her educational operas, One False Move and She Never Lost a Passenger, have received multiple performances throughout the United States.
Outside of the opera world, Kander has developed a substantial body of chamber works that highlight her evocative musical voice. Her 2009 orchestral work Miranda’s Waltz was commissioned by the National Symphony and has recently received its Australian premiere in Melbourne, which was simultaneously live-streamed throughout the world. Her most recent commercial release, Hermestänze, has received praise across the board and was named a disc that “Twenty-first century music enthusiasts won’t want to miss” (Gramophone). We welcome Kander to the Black Tea Music family and we look forward to working together.
