Program Notes
My Second Quartet was composed for the Lydian String Quartet during a residency at MacDowell in June 2019. The contrasting and developmentally linked materials of this one movement work are in dialogue with the past in a way that I think of as metaclassicism — a commentary on our shared musical memories. As the transparent, repetitive opening patiently evolves, it encounters a series of outbursts before launching into canons of greater density and momentum. At the heart is a resonant, phasing, almost static chorale made of the opening material, now completely distilled to its essence.
