Residual Energies

for two electric guitars & live electronics (2014)

Performance Score

Residual Energies is performed with two electric guitars and electronics, written as a standalone application and available from the composer. Both guitars send their output directly into audio inputs 1 and 2 of the computer’s audio interface; all processing of their sound is carried out by the software and is mixed internally before being sent out as a stereo signal from the audio interface.

Program Notes

Residual Energies explores how our brains attempt to construct meaning from chaos. The guitars stimulate complex, disparate sounds—at first disembodied and framed against silence, then increasingly folded into intense sound masses. Whispers, noise, and complex bell spectra become the vocabulary of the guitars, fragmenting our attention and creating a sense of unimaginable space.
