Program Notes
Originally composed by Gustav Mahler for voice and piano during a single day (August 16, 1901) and subsequently arranged for voice and orchestra the following day, “Ich bin der Welt abhanden gekommen” (from Mahler’s Rückert–Lieder) is a passionate setting of the words of the 19th century German romantic poet Friedrich Rückert. This lush, intimate music is extremely effective in this concert transcription for solo piano.
