Program Notes

Franz Liszt composed his monumental Fantasy and Fugue on the chorale “Ad nos, ad salutarem undam” for solo organ in Weimar in 1850 based on a chorale composed by Giacomo Meyerbeer that originally appeared in his 1849 opera Le prophète. Liszt subsequently rearranged the work for piano 4-hands and Breitkopf & Härtel published both versions in 1852. He also created and performed a version for solo piano but either he never wrote it down or the score is lost, although Ferruccio Busoni created a highly virtuosic solo piano version of it in 1897. This new concert transcription makes it possible for even more pianists to tackle a significant keyboard showcase.
