“Within, and inevitably in competition with, the genre’s history and daunting repertory, Chasalow engages in expressions of personality and idiom, his goal, as he says, ‘to reconcile the different musics that I love, especially jazz, with Western art music tradition without self-consciously lifting cliches.’ At the time of composition, Chasalow had been listening to the World Saxophone Quartet, along with Beethoven’s late string quartets.”
